Salman Khan posing with a talking parrot that will feature in ‘Bigg Boss 6.’

- Colors announced the launch of the new edition of its reality show – “Bigg Boss Season 6,” which takes off daily at 2100 hours IST from Oct.7, with a press conference at Mumbai’s Trident Bandra-Kurla Complex Sept.16.Punning on the Hindi word for the number six, “Chhe,” the tag-line reads “Bigg Boss Season Chhe – Alag Chhe,” the latter in Gujarati meaning, “It’s different.”
Not only are they terming it a ‘Family Pack,” (the major change in the show, which will now offer ‘wholesome family entertainment’ like the films of the host Salman Khan) but in keeping with that promise, the show will now air at primetime rather than late night like the earlier five seasons. Of course, the channel executives were cagey about how they got to do this major change (controversial contestants will be kept away and the editing of what is going on within the house will be sharper) considering that this is a licensed format of “Celebrity Big Brother” that in all its avatars in every nation thrives on controversy and adult material, or at least on exposing the dark side of everyone. The other difference from the norm will be a fish and a talking parrot named Radhe (after Salman’s character in “Tere Naam”), a new “Panic Room,” whose use, along with the contestants, will be revealed only on opening day but also the entry of at least two non-celeb common people among the contestants. After this announcement some weeks ago, Colors CEO Raj Nayak said that there were a record 180,000 registrations within 24 hours.Salman also stated that the excessive negativity of the last season had prompted this decision, and the buzz is strong that the actor agreed to host this season only under that condition. He also promised that despite his busy schedule, this time he would not play truant from any episode and be present every Friday on the show. “The 9 p.m. slot is for family viewing,” he pointed out.The USP of the show, the ‘pressure-cooker’ situations, will continue as the contestants will have no sense of time or date. The inhabitants will be together for 90 days – with 63 cameras following their every little move 24x7 and “Bigg Boss,” the ultimate authority in the house, the entity that ensures that their stay is anything but comfortable. The press-con, as is usual with such events in Mumbai, and especially so with Colors, was inordinately late in starting and the fun-n’-games with Salman Khan on stage (prompted by a ear-piece) was rather testing with the juvenile humor of the script and the way things were being stretched. We hope that the show lacks the stretched elastic band quotient. Good entertainment is about quality, not quantity or length.
